How a successful professional library group was developed and continues to maintain a passionate, proactive approach for its members.

When a dedicated group of library professionals wishes to make a difference to their specialist field of work, why look further than this group in Victoria, Australia? Professional development – we provide it. Network – we do it. Lobby – that too. Problem solve – we support and develop real solutions to problems. Sound too good to be true? It isn’t. Health Libraries Inc. (HLInc) was formed in 2001 with members all across the state of Victoria, some interstate, overseas and trade. HLInc has always been committed to the promotion of resource sharing, professional development, consortia planning and implementation and producing great service to its members, and the communities to which we serve. This paper will outline the beginnings of HLInc, explore the management structure, discuss our major initiatives, successes and the pros and cons of establishing and maintaining a specialised library group that has a proven record of offering support, and professional development to the grassroots level of Health Librarianship in Australia. An active group which involves itself in a range of activities that appeal to the variety of library professionals that make up our membership. By the end of this presentation you will be aware of how good planning, commitment and ongoing enthusiasm has formed the foundations of the model that makes HLInc the professional and financial success it is today.
