Managing Risks to Maori Library Collections

As libraries in Aotearoa move into the next generation, risk management will became increasingly important when making decisions on the preservation of library collections. While a traditional approach to preservation in libraries focuses on the physical condition of a single item, risk management, which informs and guides decision makers in many industries, addresses the question “What will be the condition of my collection at a point in the future if no actions are taken or new actions are taken?” Library collections are at risk of loss and damage from many factors. These range from gradual but constant events such as lights being left on in a storage area to rare but catastrophic events such as floods and fires. The ability to mange different risks will have a great effect on the condition of library materials in aotearoa in the future. This talk is from the perspective of a Māori conservator who advises and works with Māori communities to preserve their taonga. Case studies of Māori library collections and iwi archives in New Zealand will be discussed as will risks that are specific to Māori library collections and ways in which these risks can be managed. The examples will have relevance to all who are responsible for making decisions on the long-term preservation of library collections.
